Airborne and Breathtaking

What a day!  It was one of firsts, and boy did it take my breath away.

I mean, seeing the Everglades from the airboat is one thing:

But seeing it from the sky at 800ft?  That’s a whole other story:

1002180026 1002180027 1002180029 1002180030

I can’t even describe to you the “ah” I was in when we finally started to cover these areas for our transects.  I was literally speechless.  The pictures do not do this extraordinary environment the justice it deserves…but I assure you, it was amazing.  If you ever get a chance to fly over the Everglades, please do it!!!  You will not be disappointed!

~~

I wanted something different than oats for breakfast but knew I needed something filling, so I went with this:

  • WF Whole Wheat Bakery Bread
  • 1.5 T PB
  • Banana
  • Dried Cranberries
  • Cinnamon

Want to see the plane I was in?

Want to see the plane I wish we had flown in?

1002180008

I was up in the air for about 3.5 hrs this morning flying transects and back and forth over a wildlife management area looking for nesting wading birds.  I’ve never been prone to motion sickness as I’ve worked on airboats, can read in cars, ride roller coasters, etc…but this was a whole other beast.  I was fine for the first 6 transects, and then I started to get urpy with every wind gust and air pocket we hit…and it was all downhill from there.  I munched on a few whole wheat saltines…but as soon as they made me feel better, they made me feel worse.

I won’t give you details, but lets put it this way, it’s almost 12 hrs later and I’m still sick…next time, dramamine is going to happen!

Anyhow, I got home and had to have something to eat since it had been about 6 hrs since breakfast, so I settled on a tomato and sharp cheddar cheese sandwich and some cantaloupe and a peach.

Afterwards, my afternoon was pretty much shot because of the sick feeling and I just kind wandered around the house and took a much needed nap.  After waking I wanted to bake, but the sight and smell of food wasn’t working for me either.  So I did some stretching and started on dinner, which needed to be simple and eaten quickly.  I ended up scrambling an egg and two whites and then topped them off with salsa, and made some butternut squash fries.  I think my oven is off because I had it up at 450 and they still weren’t roasting!

I was still hungry so I ate the last two of my Super Charge Me Cookies.  Those things are so great tasting and filling; they’re awesome for the field work days!  The rest of the evening was spent running errands for work and getting some groceries, where I might have splurged and bought two different kinds of PB. You’ll see them soon enough.

I’m exhausted now so I’m going to bed as soon as I finish this sentence!

Side Note:

Everyone’s responses to yesterday’s question about fear foods was very interesting!  It’s amazing to see that so many of us worry about the same things, and also that the fear doesn’t just come in the types of food we’re consuming, but the shear number of calories we take in.  I hope that as you read my experiences with these issues, you also take some time to read the comments left by others (which many of you did already! yay!) and learn from them also.  I believe these comments and my discussions will not only help me during my many phases of recovery, but also all those working through the same issues and who might need the extra encouragement!

I must admit though, I not only fear the foods afore mentioned also have the calorie issue.  More often than not I’m concerned about eating a certain food, but in reality it’s also how many calories I’m eating throughout the day.  I have had periods where this wasn’t so much of a problem, but as of late it has come back as a full fledged issue.  I’m working hard to get away from this, but when you have it memorized how many calories are in everything you eat, and even the things you don’t have normally, it’s hard to move past that factor.

More of that discussion to commence later…I’m exhausted!

Oh!  But you would be so proud, after reading all your wonderful comments in response to my fear of olive oil, I used some tonight.  Not a lot, but just enough to lightly cover my butternut squash before putting my spices on it and roasting it in the oven.  Baby steps right?  Now I just need to buy my own bottle so I have no excuse NOT to use it!

love bnut squash fries! they're amazing. my dad even likes them (he considers iceberg with blue cheese dressing a veggie haha).

GREAT job trying to add the fear food in slowly. baby steps are the best kind! when i regained weight after being severely underweight i binged on ALL my fear foods and it was AWFUL.

I can only imagine how amazing the everglades must have looked from the plane. I went sky diving a few years ago over Homestead and it was really awesome! Butternut squash fries are the best, aren't they?

YUM that cheese-tomato sandwich looks soooo good. Seriously, I'll prob have it for lunch. I'm playing catch-up on your posts, so I'm excited to read the "fear foods" one! (going backward, obviously)

AMAZING pictures - so cool! I have to say I am jealous that was your job fun :D

Ok - I swear by Sea Bands and Bonine. Sea Bands you put on your wrist and they use accupuncture pressure points to keep you from getting sick. I highly recommend them.

I like Bonine Better than Dramamine because you don't get all sleep from it.

I am super proud of you for using Olive oil on your "fries"! Delicious eats :D

Have a great weekend,

Danica

Good job on using the olive oil!!
And I understand about the calories. I do not consciously count calories but I know exactly, down do the exact amount (thank you ED..), how many calories are in almost everything and so I can't help but to know how many calories I am eating. And it's so easy to obsess over it and get sucked back in to that world. But be strong!!!!! You can do it!
And I'm learning a lot from reading comments and seeing everyone's own experiences and views. It's amazing how one thing, an eating disorder, can affect people in so many different ways.
Those pictures are breathtaking!
