HAPPY EARTH DAY!!!

If you saw my tweet:

Melissa Schlothan @TryingToHeal Happy Earth Day...I'm off to do my job: Saving endangered species. What are you doing for Earth Day?

So, let me know how you helped! I'd love to hear all about it!

I didn't necessarily save any birds today...but I did take some awesome panorama pictures of the Everglades for you!

I entered today with an open mind and the idea that it was going to be better...and it was, just not as much as I had hoped it would be.

But lets not dwell on the off-ness of my days but of the goodness of the great comments I got throughout today, the company of my awesome coworker...and getting the crap scared out of my from an angry momma gator only 10ft away from me.

What? You've never seen/heard an angry gator momma?

I have, it's terrifying.

But I digress...time for breakfast!

I'm in a hurry to use up all my food and produce in the next week before I leave so bear with me as I consume odd and strange combinations of food. This morning? I chopped up a TJ's Apple Spice Muffin, threw in a banana, some strawberries and a tablespoon of Naturally Nutty PB for some sweetness and protein...yummy in my tummy.

After a few long hours of driving (longer than it needed to be because we forgot things like GPS and phone and had to drive back...boo) we finally got the boat in and took another hour to get out to our points...blah. At least it was pretty! I ate an orange as Brit drove and as soon as we stopped I snacked on one of my favorite Luna Bars I haven't had in a long time:

CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY!

I forgot how much I loved this bar. This one and the Caramel Brownie one are my favorites...hence why I had that one the other day.

We picked up and put out cameras...or at least tried around the gator holes until we got scared shitless when they started bellowing around us...VERY TERRIFYING.

Lunch was consumed in a snap as we had a lot more work to do than anticipated...I gobbled down a Tempeh Hummus Sandwich on a Bagel Thin with a Jazz Apple in hopes of keeping my belly happy.

Of course we know that didn't happen. I didn't quite understand and wasn't accepting of the fact I was still hungry (um, I am the exact opposite of most Americans in that I am MORE HUNGRY when it's HOT and LESS HUNGRY when it's COLD; am I alone on this one?) but knowing full well I didn't eat enough yesterday, I had a second bar for the day (which btw is very taboo in my head, but I'm working on it) that was more dense than the first:

PB Clif Bar

And now I remember why I hate these...blah. I ate too many in the field last year, hence the aversion from anything Clif (other than Mojo Bars, that's another story).

The afternoon was long and hot, but we got through it after docking the boat, driving some more, putting the boat back out, checking predator stations for prints, docking the boat again, returning it to the boat yard and getting home...almost 12 hrs in the field baby...I love my job.

You can bet that as soon as I got home I ran straight to the fridge; seriously, no joke, if you saw my other post on Twitter:

Melissa Schlothan @TryingToHeal

Just want to be home...so tired and hungry. i feel like i'm withering away...

Apparently I need to pack more food for my day. All I did was drive around, I probably walked a grand total of a 1/4 mile with the work we did today...

Anyhow, fast and easy dinner:
  • spaghetti squash
  • broccoli
  • okra
  • cauliflower
  • salsa
  • laughing cow cheese
  • sourdough bread

This is how we do ittttt....

Of course you can bet I had dessert...after the past two days? It's a must. No picture because i wanted it in my belly but it contained TJ's Chocolate Pudding made w/ USAB, strawberries and a handful of Peanut Sunprises...Oh yeah. I totally pulled an Evan and put them on something instead of eating them alone.

K, bed time. This chick is exhausted.

Do you think maybe you get hungry so quickly is because while your meals are high in volume, they are not really calorically that dense?

Please don't be offended, I'm just speaking from experience.

The views during your days are SOOOOOOO gorgeous! Gators are crazy scary. People fish like right next to the ones in my neighborhood and it makes me super nervous. There are certain clif bars that always sound like they're going to taste good and then they end up just being meh! I like the Lunas and mojos much better than the regular clifs. Great dinner mix. Spaghetti squash!

Your meals sound delicious!!!! I know it's hard to sometimes listen to your body and feed it when you think you "shouldn't" be hungry. Just keep at it!
And i'm the same way! I'm so much more hungry in the summer than the winter. It's odd!

Hehe, isn't it easier to pace yourself when they're on something else? I also just love the colors!

Angry momma gator? I seriously would have crapped my pants, you're wayyyy braver than me!! I think your job definitely takes the cake on Earth Day though :)

LOVE that Luna Bar flavor! My bars always get smooshed in my bag too, I've been putting them in my sunglasses case to keep them from breaking!

PB&Jenny wrote an awesome post yesterday on eating REAL food v. ED-approved food, even after "recovery." I struggle with this a lot too, and I think it's one of the reasons I'm hungry so often. I had a BIG, REAL sandwich with CHEESE and OIL today as a challenge to myself, and I only just got hungry, nearly 5 hours later! It's something I still need to work on, but you can do it girl!!

Hope you're having an amazing Friday love!!

I tried that Luna last week and thought it was great, too! I would never want to hear what an angry mama gator sounds like. I didn't even know they made noises!!! Doh!
