Resolutions make me anxious, I can’t lie about that. As someone who is much of a control freak, when things are not accomplished I’m left on a bit of an edge. Therefore, this year I will no make resolutions, but of the things I would like to do to make my life more fulfilling and what it might take to achieve them! The list might seem like a lot, but it’s all things I want to do, not necessarily things I want to change. Does that make sense?
- Run a Marathon
- Already signed up for San Diego Rock n’ Roll on 5th June!
- Run more 1/2 Marathons
- Two in the books: Phoenix 16th January, Oakland 27th March
- Be more Environmentally Conscious
- No more Paper Towels: This is such a landfill filler and I hate it. Using a towel and washing it doesn’t make more trash!
- More Tupperware Use: Using ziploc bags always makes me mad, even when I was and reuse them, but they only last about 4 washes before the zip part starts to get funky!
- Buying Organic: Not only will this reduce pesticides used in our environment, but it will also help with the runoff from rain and the shear amount of dust that rises in the valley with air pollution.
- Buying Local: I live in an agricultural town so I have no excuse. This will reduce emissions and green house gases that is killing my precious earth. I hate watching the haze that sits over LA because of all the traffic…and that my food sits in it.
- Less Energy: Turn off surge protectors and unplug appliances when I’m gone at work for 8-10 hours a day. They’re not being used so why have them on?
- Help An Environmental Organization:
- Sea and Sage Audubon Society (Irvine, CA): This is the BIG one for the year. I have fundraised for an environmental organization before (T.R.E.A.T. in Australia) and it brought me so much gratification that I want to do it again. Running the Marathon in SD in June will help me accomplish this, so stay tuned for details on how you can help and donate!
- Travel
- Florida: Friends and Last Hurrah: I have so many friends in FL that I would love to see so there’s that…along with the weather being awesome and the ocean water warm. But there is also my very last chance to DRIVE AN AIRBOAT!!! After this year I won’t know anyone who has access to one so I have to…I don’t realize how much I miss driving them until they’re not around for me to ride on!
- Hawaii: I have been to Maui and since my boyfriend is from Kauai…it gives me an excuse to visit another island. Sorry Mom, I’m gonna beat you again.
- Japan: History: My brother just visited Japan and is the first out of anyone in my family to get there. I’m 4th generation Japanese American and we know very little about anything past that. I would LOVE to travel over there and learn more about my ancestors…!
- Connect More With Friends
- This includes both blog friends and my real friends. It’s one thing to talk to people all the time online (seems like I rarely even use my phone to connect!) but something else to hang out in person. That and I have neglected my college/high school friends for too long; I miss them too much.

- Australia: I just love it. I want to go back just for the sake of going and playing in the rainforest.
- Treat My Body with Respect
- No More Calorie Counting: This drives me wild everyday.
- No More Restricting/Fear Foods: I have missed out on too many outings, restaurant visits and foods I love. It’s time to eat the things I want, whenever I want to!
- Run For Fun: I will run to break my own records, enjoy the company of friends, travel to new places and remind myself I can be fast and proud of my body. I shouldn’t run to just burn calories; that’s no fun.
- Cook With a Vengeance: I cook the same thing all the time! It’s time to bust out all the cookbooks and really use them!
- Update My Wardrobe: It’s time to become a girl. I may have an outdoorsy job that doesn’t require me to have nice clothes (and instead dress like a boy!) so it’s time to buy some dresses, skirts, blouses and have fun with them, patterns, colors and all!
I’ve got a lot of things to look forward to this year!!! We’ll see how they’ll make me grow!!!!
What are your goals or things you want to do in 2011?!

A goal I have for 2011 is to start running again after I totally recover. I'm so excited to start again!
I loved reading what you want in 2011, very inspiring!
I have a goal to COMPLETELY heal my stress fracture and begin running again. I'm PRAYING it's attainable.
And if so, we need to run a race together one day!! How fun would that be?!
Annnd I've still got to comment on your last post... mind-blowing.I don't even know how to put my thoughts together yet.
Love the goals! I like attainable goals too. I tend to be hard on myself if I don't keep them all. I especially like your commitment to eat local. Nealy 100% of my produce is local and it tastes so so good!
Excited for SD :)
i can't even imagine living in california and having access to yummy local food all year round.
Those are great goals, Melissa! They're very self-aware, and I know you can make a huge progress in them this year. Nobody is perfect and it's quite impossible to attain every of our goals, but we can certainly work ahead towards them!
Hoorah for a great 2010, and yay to a new, wonderful 2011! :-)
I am with you on your last goal "dress more like a girl". I have lived in sweat pants and singlets for I don't know how long. It's about time I start acting like my gender and wear a dress...whether I like it or not haha.
GREAT goals :)

I LOVE all the travel goals. That's an amazing list of places to visit!! And I also love the ones about respecting your body. You deserve to be happy with yourself :)
Oh and by the way, you know what the awesome thing about sundresses is? No waistband. I love that in the summer I can eat cupcakes and strawberries to my heart's desire without worrying about that sweaty waistband thing :)
I absolutely LOVE your list. The food and travel goals resonate with me...the only problem with traveling is that it takes so much money. But I've got the travel bug! I'd love to go to Hawaii again, and in the next few years, I'd love to make it to Italy and Greece! Happy travels Melissa!
I love your environmental goals! Cutting down on paper towel usage is something I need to do for my wallet AND the environment. Happy 2011! :)
I want to work on loving my body by not treating it like crap with my emotional eating. My only goal so I can achieve it! Girl if I move pls visit me!! Also I live how sone of YOUR goals are to help earth!
My goal is to find more balance in life. I generally try to fit 26 hours of stuff into a day, and obviously, that's just not possible. Oh, how to begin ... :)
You go girl with that marathon!! I too want to stop calorie counting and get rid of my fear foods. Ooh and I am going to Australia to study abroad! So if you make it back over there, let me know :)
I really, really want to train for the half portion of the Rock N Roll marathon. I keep freaking out about it. I need to write out a good training plan and stick to it.
I found some reuseable/washable ziploc bags on ETSY and I love them! Highly recommend.
Andy and I went to Kauai in July and had such an awesome time. I loved it!
I loved your list, Melissa!
It's definitely a long one, but I'm sure you can do all of it :)
I could really relate to the "treat by body with respect" topic... And "connect with friends"!
Let's just hope we'll both succeed :)
Happy New Year!
xoxo
Your list is wonderful. It is inspiring me to write one of my own. Thanks!
AMAZING LIST! Thank you I am so inspired I find my goals need to be similar!
Wow, that's awesome about doing a marathon! I'd love to visit Japan too. Great list here!
Some of my goals are running two half-marathons, creating more recipes and becoming a better photographer.
I love your list of goals! One of my goals this year is also to shop locally and more organically. We have a ton of farmers markets where I live and I do a garden every spring and summer and this year I hope to be able to shop locally/organically even more. And travel! I'm graduating this year so I'm hoping to get in some traveling starting with the Sakura festival in March. It's not quite Japan, but close!
GREAT goals! I like how you hit so many areas of your life and I really believe these are attainable! Good luck with them and I can't wait to see you meet your goals!
Just saw your comment on my page..I'm in Southern Cali, near Riverside. Where are you?
I love your list Melissa! I see great things this year for you! :)
resolutions make me anxious too! I like to think of these things as growth opportunities. I love the run for fun goal. Such a mental relief.
Cheers!

I did the Oakland Half last year and really enjoyed it. It def allows you to appreciate Oakland more! I'm in the process of deciding for this year, but since I live in Oakland I will probably be there no matter what! Woo.
