Many people, myself included, are afraid of change. For me, there are certain kinds of change that terrify the crap out of me, but then others that I don’t blink an eye at.
Ask me to jump on a plane to a foreign country and I’m all for it…even if it does cost me a good amount of $$$. Ask me to ran in another state, in a different environment, and with random people and I’m in the car in a heartbeat.
But if you ask me to try a new food for the first time, I’m terrified to crazy! But it’s not necessarily because I’m afraid of how it’s going to taste, I’ve been afraid of the number of calories and it’s ability to keep me satisfied. A tad bit crazy I know, but it’s just part of recovery!
So this morning, after putting them off since I received them from Kaitlin back when we had our Blogger Cookie Exchange, I tried out Chia Seeds for the first time.
What what? And not only that, but I also used a different green, and lots of it, instead of my beloved spinach, because I’m out: KALE!!! I have the intention of making kale chips at some point, but also wanted to try it in my smoothie. Thirty seconds later and the follow ingredients later and I had a great smoothie for breakfast!
-Banana
-1/2C UNSVAB
-2T PB Flour
-1.5 tsp soaked Chia Seeds
-1/2C frozen Blueberries
-Large handful of Raw Kale
-Dash of Guar Gum
-Bunch of Ice
-3/4C Heart to Heart
Get this yo, it was astounding! I could taste the kale, a bit, but I used more of it than I use spinach when I normally make my smoothies! I definitely want to do this again, but will try again with more spinach when I get my hands on some…but since I’ve started going organic I may not do so…that stuff is expensive eh!!!
It’s a gorgeous day outside and after I finish laundry I’m out to go for a run and enjoy the sun!
Have fun watching the super bowl and cheering on the teams that are playing…because I don’t know who’s in it anyhow. Hah!

Aah I feel you on the change thing! I jumped on a plane from England to Chicago for the Healthy Living Summit, ran my first marathon in a foreign country - Washington Dc - and want to move far away from home. BUT I have the eact same thing with food! I worry if something will keep me satiated for long enough (I think I worry that if it doesn't, I'll get hungry too soon and eat too much), so i totally understand you.
Isn't kale in green smoothies the best!? It goes well with cocoa powder :D
Everytime you do something that's hard for you..or anytime you accept change and go with--I think it really makes you a stronger person. EVerytime you try a food that is scary--you are becoming a stronger person!
That smoothie sounds delicious. The kale that we got this week looks so good. I can't wait to use it! I still haven't made kale chips. I might have to!
Ooh, that does look like some wonderful running weather. It's not humid, right? (I don't know anything about where you are in California...)
I can totally relate to the fear of trying new foods and the calorie vs satiety issue.
I realized a while ago that if I never step out of the box and try new things I'll never know what I'm missing out on. So sometimes it's worth it to try something new.
The weather there looks lovely. Hope you enjoy your run!
I've always been one to hate ALL kinds of change which is what lead me down the slippery road to an eating disorder.
It's great that you are moving out of your comfort zone when it comes to trying new foods. I always like the phrase, "I'll never know if I don't try." And it's true! I used to think that anything other than oats wouldn't satisfy me for breakfast but when I tried something new, it turned out that other foods DID satisfy me. I just had to be willing to try them first.
What were the chia seeds like? I'm kinda iffy about them because they're all little and seedy. haha duh!
xxx
Can I tell you that I am just a tad jealous of your gorgeous view as I look outside my window to 20 inches of snow. :(
Hope you enjoyed the run!
I've always been sooo afraid of change, too. I used to buy all these new food to motivate myself to make some changes, but would always fall back to the same old, same old. It took a bigger leap to actually embrace change...instead of making baby steps, when I just went far above and beyond what i thought my limits were, that's when that fear just started evaporating.
I had that same fear of food changes in my ED and still do in a way, but more of processed and un-vegan foods. Awesome on trying kale and chia seeds, both were in my smoothie this morning too. :-) Next you're gotta try chia seed pudding - yum!
Hi Melissa! I just came across your blog and absolutely love it. Please keep writing, you're such an inspiration!!!
I just tried Kale in my smoothie for the first time too - and with the same success!
I totally relate to being scared of new foods because I don't want to leave unsatisfied...but it's good for us every once in a while!
I just love your blog :)
I also do not like change, so I completely understand what you are talking about!!!
Just remember everytime you try something different such as food, you are becoming an evern stronger person! You're amazing girl!
I also will not be watching the superbowl, i'm studying! ;)
Enjoy your run!!
xoxo
I totally understand everything!! I've been reading your blog for a while, and it's been such an inspiration..even if you think you are still struggling. You are an inspiration to me to overcome my problem. Keep it up, you are doing awesome and I hope I can be as brave as you are ( :
I completly agree about the change thing.
Something like food scares me (though I am trying to work on that), but everything else, like a new country etc, is an adventure to me.
Well done for facing that fear of change head on! :)
I adore chia seeds. Your eats look awesome.
Haha, I totally forgot I gave you those chia seeds! How funny. I'm glad you liked them!
As for change... girl, I feel you! Change is very, very hard for me at times. I can be so rigid and inflexible. Once, I got mad at my mom for painting our dining room without telling me first. No joke.
Did you find that the chia seeds got kinda "slimy" in the smoothie? I tried that once and the consistency got gel-like which didn't appeal to me. I love to bake with chia seeds, though!!
