Bring Back The Real Thing!

Ahhh…I’m so sad right now!  Wait, I’ll get to it in a second…

This morning started off better, well, better than yesterday.  I noticed that like yesterday I wake up feeling fine, getting ready for work and prepping breakfast…then about 5-10 minutes after I’m done eating I start to feel horrible.  I don’t feel like this after any other meal, just breakfast…strange.  I’m experimenting with different things to see what it is.

I thought maybe it was the nut butter…that one of them is bothering me…so I stuck with peanut flour this morning mixed into some soy yogurt w/ a kiwi, strawberries and kashi go lean crunch.

I still felt sick afterwards, but it wasn’t as bad as yesterday, where it was so unbearable that it put me to sleep.  Blah.  Anyhow, I spotted this beauty while I was out in the desert!

That’s the flower of a Joshua Tree!  I can’t wait until it blooms!  How cool are the flowers?!

Anyhow, it was a beautiful morning out in the desert…and I had a pear to go along with the birding.

The yogurt mess didn’t last me as long as I suspected so lunch was ready and waiting when I got hungry! I had two pieces of bakery bread (this one has parsley and other herbs along with pieces of nuts and celery bits in it!) with some TJ’s Red Pepper Spread with Eggplant and Garlic that I mixed with 1/2 a small avocado.  I also had some cucumber, tomato slices and mixed greens in there.

And finished it off with a Banana Walnut Muffin.  Hit the spot for the afternoon.

A few hours late I was hungry for a snack so I finished off the Sweet Potato Chips my mom brought from the weekend (just less than a serving) and a handful of chocolate chips. What, I needed a boost for my run, alright?  Hah!

With some encouragement from twitter friends I finally got out the door for a run, and am I glad I did!  I didn’t feel like it in the beginning because I was running against the wind, but that was my plan.  I like running into the wind in the beginning of a run because I know I have more energy at that time, and then the way back is that much better…besides, it would be warmer too because that wind sure does bring down the temps!  Alas, I was going to run 6 miles but was feel’n so good I ended up doing 7!  I finished in 1:05 and did some abs afterwards for ST.

Then, it was time for dinner.  While working on the meal, I snacked on two oranges that have been piling up on my dinner table to keep me settled, or from eating my arm is more like it.  I was starving!

Then it was time to try a new product.  Since I’ve eliminated DAIRY in my diet I’ve been looking for a feasible alternative.  Being in a small town means we have nil, so my mom did me a favor and looked at one of the local health foods stores for some choices.  She found Daiya, but saw how expensive it was and searched for another that didn’t contain casein (a milk protein).  She found this one and bought me both the cheddar and mozzarella varieties.

I decided to use it in a quesadilla that I filled up with shallots, tomato, fava bean greens, green garlic, cilantro and some of the cheese.  I topped it off with the other 1/2 of the avocado for more protein and hoped it would be ok.

KILL.ME.NOW.

That is THE WORST cheese on the face of the planet.  I took a bite of one piece and thought, “Ok, this tastes odd, but I’ll give it another shot with another bite.”  By the time I finished that slice I was on the verge of hurling.  Sorry to say, but it reminded me of one of the very few times I’ve actually thrown up in my life.  Yes, it tasted like BARF.  Good God I wanted to die.

I hope that the mozzarella won’t be as bad, but I don’t have such high hopes.  Sadness.  Sorry Mom, you did your best.  We might have to go with Daiya and bit the price bullet.

I want the real thing back.  Like now.  Damned you stomach, or digestive system, or Asian roots.  Gah!

I chucked the rest of the quesadilla into the trash, sad that I wasted my organic goods on something that would have been good, and had to resort to something I could make fast because in all reality, that 7 miler left me ravenous. I quickly cooked a Morningstar Burger, salvaged the avocado and added mustard and tomatoes to a piece of bakery bread for dinner.  Quite disappointing from what I had imagined.

Obviously that wasn’t enough for dinner so now I’m noshing on a thawed out Lemon Blueberry Scone that I’ve been eyeing for a while.  Gotta go with what you want, right?

Time for NCIS!  Or Glee?  Oh goodness the decisions I have to make…

Hm. I tend to stick with nutritonal yeast or casheshw cheese. Yes, cheese made out of cashews, garlic, lemon juice and probably things I am forgetting. My roommate made it once and it's actually quite good. Now it's my go to cheese like food. Daiya is good but pricey like you said.

I am gluten, dairy and and soy intolerant and was SO excited when I saw the same brand of cheese that you also tried in my local health food store. I couldn't wait to try them later that night.....and then I took my first bite....oh my goodness! It was one of the most disgusting food products I've ever tasted. It made me slightly ill to even see the picture on you post.
I am so sorry you had to same disappointment!

I heard raw cheese is better for the stomach, or goat cheese. Something not from the cow....but yeah, cheese just can't be substituted. sorry, Melissa! I know it sucks...:-(

EEKS! Cheese that makes your barf? That should be illegal. I'm sorry. I hate when one lil thing can ruin your whole meal. The rest of your eats look good today though!
p.s added you on DailyMile!!

Ick, that cheese sounds terrible! Your breakfast is gorgeous though. And you have suchh a cool job :)

I agree, you might give raw cheese a try, although I don't know if it's legal to sell in CA or not (raw dairy regulations vary widely from state to state). Also goat's milk and goat's milk cheese have way less lactose in them than cow's milk products do and thus are more easily tolerated by folks who have dairy woes. Sheep are kind of in between the two. And hard goat cheeses don't really taste goaty. Also, you might give almond cheese a try. I've had the mozzarella variety and it tastes like a slightly almondy mozzarella. Quite nice really. Good luck in the cheese search!

bahhhhh! Sometimes imitation products just do not taste anything like the real thing! Your Banana Walnut Muffins look fantastic (you are the muffin making queen!!). And hooray for 70! Its supposed to be about that hot in Charleston today too- can't wait<3

The Daiya is totally worth it, just don't use a lot of it so the package will go a long way. I also sub avocado for cheese as it has the creaminess I'm looking for. I don't eat dairy and don't really miss it anymore (I"m intolerant). With time you will need less "cheese" on your food and the daiya will be a treat. Good luck.

Nooothing melts quite like Naya! I do like the vegan cheese slices you can find packaged kinda like kraft american slices. I'm not sure of the brand...i'll try to remember to look!

Daiya is pretty worth it. I'm a real cheese lover, like you, but I also love Daiya!

I encourage you (if you want and have the taste for it) to switch up your brekkies for mor savory options...I know you don't do eggs or egg whites, which I love with greens...but if you have the appetite maybe try to eat some steamed greens and stuff in the morning?
Alicia Silverstone wrote and amazing book...by the way please read it if you can check it out from the library or whatever...called the Kind Life Diet. She emphasizes grains and greens...

I don't know, some can't stomach that in the am, but for me? I can't handle the cake battery sweet oats in the am. I also can't handle eating just fruit...sets me up for an eating bender all day..

Sorry for my two cents but maybe it can help.

That quesadilla looked so great! I thought for sure you were gonna sing its praises. Sorry to hear it was so gross!!

This is testament that "you get what you pay for". Shoulda' gone for the Daiya, worth every penny and more. And because it comes shredded it stretches a long way. And it also stretches when melted :) They have a new pepperjack version coming out later this month - sampled some at Expo West, you'll be hooked, guaranteed!
