I have also tried my hardest to reduce the amount of waste I produce. As much as I would love to compost, it’s not the easiest thing to do in a second story apartment. But, I have changed over to all green cleaners and even using my own mixtures with vinegar and baking soda (btw, would you like to hear how to make your own cleaners? Let me know!) and discovered reusable cleaning rags when I was offered to do a giveaway and review for iHerb!
Anyhow, besides all the changes that I’ve made to help better the earth, I hope that this week you take some time to focus on the environment and what you can do for it. It could be as simple as not using paper towels or plates to eat your food on, or recycling your bottles and newspapers. But something I believe you’ll really enjoy if you haven’t seen it already, is a great series hosted by the Discovery Channel called:

(Source)
You can bet that I own the series and have watched every video several different times. I’m partial to a few of them (uh, rainforest birds galore!? Yes please!) but love them all the same. It gives you a view of the things you’ll never see in real life, from a perspective all too unique.

(Source)
There are 11 sections throughout the DVDs, ranging anywhere from the jungle to the mountains to the desert to the oceans. It’s amazing to watch and discover the actions of all the different animals throughout our precious earth.

(Source)
I can’t reiterate more than now, when the earth needs us most to do what you can to save it. So many natural habitats and species populations are being destroyed as we feel we need more space for our mansions and sky scrapers in each different city.

(Source)
It amazes me that within the next 50 years so many species of rare animals will be gone and my children will only be able to see them on videos like these ones. I hope that they might be able to travel to these areas and come across a chance to experience their presence on their own.

So in honor of Earth Day 2011 I’m doing a giveaway focusing on species that are in need of our help the most. As you know, I’m raising money for World Wildlife Fund as I run the San Diego Marathon and would appreciate your help, but no matter if it comes from donating straight to my fundraiser or spreading the word through your blog about it or this giveaway, I will be forever grateful. So without further adieu…
I am going to adopt an animal for one of my great readers!
WWF has an awesome adoption program through their site where I will be, upon a comment with what animal you would like adopted in your name, giving to one of you. But here’s the catch.
If I get over 350 comments, the winner will receive the $50 adoption package.
And IF, I get over 500 comments, the winner will get the $100 adoption package!
Now, I normally get around 150 comments for my giveaways, so I need your help in participation and spreading the word! Here are the several ways to enter, each with separate comments:
1. Leave a comment after you go to the WWF Adoption Website telling me what animal you would love to be adopted in your name!
2. Tell me one thing you are adopting to help out the earth for Earth Day!
3. Tweet about the giveaway, “Melissa @Tryingtoheal is doing a WWF Animal Adoption Giveaway! http://bit.ly/icgHCk“
4. Post about the giveaway on your blog.
You have until Friday evening at 5pm PST to get your comments in and I’ll pick a winner just in time for Earth Day, which is on Friday of course!
Good luck and I can’t wait to see what animals you love and what you’ll be doing for Earth Day!

That Tarsier thing looks pretty neat. It reminds me of a flying lemur, an animal that i never knew exsisted till a trip to Malaysia last year. Too many of the animals on that list are new to me. Our earth is crazy amazing. I would definatly want to give some funds to that little creatures survival. Also, you are an inspiring lady, thanks for sharing your life with us all.
I would love to adopt a red panda! Those things are adorable. I've actually wanted to do this in the past!
Um this is awesome. YOU are awesome! I would totally adopt a koala. I have a soft spot in my heart for those little guys :)
I would adopt the Arctic Hare.
I tweeted about your giveaway!
I would adopt the Harbor Seal :)

To help the earth, I've been remembering my reusable bags when I go shopping :). I know it's something small but hey, I think it makes a difference.

I love Planet Earth series!
I would adopt a tiger!
What a cool idea, I kinda wanna do it to :)
For earth day I am making a bird feeder for my fire escape. I live in Brooklyn and my only garden I had was on my fire escape. The birds loved it but the fire department made me get rid of my garden because it was hazardous or something ;) Anyways I see my birds out there sad because they have nothing anymore so I am making them a bird feeder!
Sarah
this is an awesome idea :)
I would pick the manatee - I have loved them since i was a little kid!
we've been switching all our lightbulbs to CFLs. we bring our own water to work in reusable bottles and use reusable silverware at lunch. our lunch bag and containers are reusable.
and we carpool! we have a long ride to work and we ride together every day to save gas.
and PS: I donated!
Melissa, you are awesome for doing this :)
Ahh it's hard to choose just one! Though if I were to choose, I would love to adopt a Lion! I have had an obsession with them since I was younger- I used to pretend I had a pet lion, I have watched The Lion King so many times that I can recite pretty much the entire thing, and they are gorgeous animals!
I think I'd adopt a koala!
I tweeted! I am @butterjessfly
To help out the earth I am planting more vegetables in my small garden! I've got tomatoes and strawberries so far.
Awh you are so sweet to do this! I don't want/need to win the give away, cos I've already adopted an animal from there - a snow leopard!! But I just want to boost your comments :)
Just tweeted :)
I would want to adopt a giraffe!
I plan on just being much better about recycling whatever I can and using more sun light and less electricity when I can.
I would adopt the okapi! It's such a unique and beautiful animal.
p.s. you're AWESOME!!!!!
I would adopt a great white shark!!
I always use reusable grocery bags, take short showers, and I live in the city so I walk everywhere!
How on earth could I choose just one?? I suppose I shall then choose a Barn Owl because I just love love love owls. They are graceful, intellegent, and loving.
in honor of earth day, I am surely trying to take shorter showers and turn off my power strip when not in use!
tweeted!
Oh. and can I just say that I think your giveaway is awesome? I don't think anyone has ever thought of this before and it's a really kind, thoughtful thing to do that is fun too!!
This really is the best "giveaway" I've seen on a blog thus far!
I'd choose the manatee. I've been a fan of these gentle giants since my friend and I wrote a report about them in the 7th grade. I hope to one day meet one in person.
I'm committed to remembering my reusable bags EACH time I shop. I'm pretty good about using them for groceries, but I forget when I go to Target or another retail store.
I'm also looking into purchasing a composter for our home. It's a little tricky since we live in military housing, but there are some that are small enough that can be put on the back porch.
Happy Earth Day!
What an awesome project Melissa! There are so many options (not a good thing) but I think I'd choose a dolphin:)
I'd choose a blue whale. So amazing!

We use cloth instead of paper when we can: bags, napkins, towels, diapers, etc.

I would adopt the Emerald Hummingbird...I love them!
One thing I'll do to help the earth would be to start using reusable bags ALL the time. Sometimes I forget to put them in my car but I'll keep them in my trunk from now on. :)
I would adopt a blue-footed booby. A live one might be slightly problematic though...especially with my cat. :) WWF's way of adoption is much more practical.
And my Earth Day commitment for this year is to bike to work as much as I can. Which means when the weather/wind permits. It's only 9 miles so I can't use 'too tired' as an excuse!
what a fantastic idea!! i have tweeted
SEA TURTLE!!!!!
I would love to adopt a polar bear.
i tweeted !
For earth week, I'm taking my workouts outside :)
I would so love to adopt a snow leopard!
This is a fantastic idea!
I think I would adopt a dolphin or a whale shark in my cousin's name for her birthday.
By the way, I LOVE that goofy looking black and blue bird photo. I watched the episode of Planet Earth (I think that's the show) with that bird and could NOT stop laughing at the courting ritual. It was fascinating!
You're just way too awesome! For Earth Week or actually lately I've been not using plastic utensils, because even though it sucks to wash dishes at college I'd rather do that than create unneeded waste. I'm also going to start going to my Farmer's Market during the summer since I'll be home! So excited for that one!
I tweeted about the giveaway!
SUCH a cool giveaway! i vote koala!!
I would adopt the meerkat. I can't believe how many of those species need adopting, by the way. It's heartbreaking. Every native creature from my home - Australia - is endangered and I had no idea!
p.s. now I'm all over the WWF site.....so badly want to do one of their trips to Africa. And I've decided everyone I know is getting adopted animals from me for their birthdays from now on. I've seen too many intelligent and human characteristics in animals to ignore them.
For earth day, I'm doubling my efforts to encourage customers NOT to take plastic utensils from me unless absolutely necessary. They don't just get thrown in the bag - we ask if they NEED them now.
I just awwed for so long over those animals!! I'm going to go with the red panda, just because I never even knew they existed before!!
More and more, I've been trying to take public transportation or walk instead of driving or taking a cab. It's cheaper and definitely far more earth-friendly!
Tweeted!!
Red Panda!!
OMG...how cute are they all? But I'm gonna go with the Harbor Seal. His face is just precious!
I do more than one thing, but we use all resuable containers at my house. No plastic bags!!
Awesome giveaway!! I know we do not comment much on your blog, but we love it. Everything you stand for we love!!
I love tigers, so I would love to adopt one. Ever since I was young I wanted my own tiger as a pet, haha
Things I try to help out the environment - eat local, reduce waste, reduce, reuse and recycle, eat organic as much as possible

I think this is a great selfless giveaway. I used to have a penguin that I adopted from the zoo. This time I'd love to support a humpback whale because we had this whole unit on them in elementary school that I still remember as one of my favorites. It'd be honoring my teacher who sadly has since passed away and this majestic animal.
Also, I tweeted!
Hey Melissa! You are awesome for doing this giveaway (well, and in many other respects). Anyway, I would love to have a pygmy elephant adopted in my name. They are so precious.
Do anonymous comments help towards the 200?? Because I don't have a google account or any of those listed, but I'm still a loyal follower and would love for this to reach at leasstt 200. So here's my ballot towards the 200.
Love all your posts. You are awesome.
This is a great idea! I would go for the snow leopard. I'm from WI, and now that wolves are back from the brink, quite a few folks think they should be able to hunt wolves again! It's always a struggle to protect wildlife.
Hello, My name is Rosa. I just discovered your blog. It combines my three favorite things: birding, running, and baked goods! I'd adopt the snowy owl. Thanks!
I would love to adopt a cougar or mountain lion as we call them here. They are such magnificent felids and really just keep to theirselves. I live where mt lions are getting numerous, so we control their spread out of the region through a highly regulated hunting season, which I see the need for (since we, humans, are increasing in population so rapidly and selfishly).
Thanks for having this giveaway! The means so much to me and we need to follow what Aldo Leopold wrote in his land ethic.
I would love to adopt a panda, as they are an endangered species and the more we can do to help them now, the longer they will survive.
Otters are my favorites! I would definitely love to play with a sea otter, adopting one is probably the next best idea :D
A Cheetah would be awesome! Thank you!
We've "adopted" my nephew for Earth Day. Ecology Center Crafts and Cakes in the afternoon, a vegan dinner and maybe "Rio"...great fun!
i'd adopt a tiger or snow leopard :) this giveaway is so sweet
starting from today i'll adopt the earth friendly habit to stop spitting my gum out where ever i feel like it
I just adopted a tiger for my brothers 21st and an owl for Mothers Day for my mum. Thanks for bringing my attention to this great gift option!
beaver. had idea they were even on the list ......

i recyle and eat local and try to minimize waste - though could do much, much better that one ...
jacquieastemborski AT comcast DOT net
I would probably say manatee, I have always had a soft spot in my heart for them.
I would adopt an Okapi for sure !
I am going to try to eat more local foods in honor of this amazing earth.
