Fire Heart Break

Hey everyone.  I’m currently on edge right now because the mountain range just South of me is absolutely ablaze.  I have worked up there for months and it is one of the most pristine mountain areas I have ever been to. Previous, it has looked like this:

Now, it looks like this:

I can’t even describe to you the anxiety and pain that is washing over me.  My heart literally hurts because I hate to see mother nature being destroyed.  I’m literally just speechless.  I was that girl on the side of the road, squatted down with my hands on the side of my head, tears streaming down my face because of the loss that is happening.

I had a full post for you with lots of food but I can’t even think about food right now.  I didn’t even want to eat dinner I felt so sick to my stomach.  Hopefully I will have better news tomorrow…

CA fire season is always so devastating. I know that nature does sometimes need it for renewal, but that never makes it easier (especially when it's avoidable). Take care and keep yourself safe.

firstly, I am sorry that your forest is burning and know that this is a scary and overwhelming site.
As a fellow biologist, however, I feel the need to remind us all that fire is a natural part of life.
I know fire seems like a devastating force and what it leaves behind is not as esthetically pleasing to our eyes, but there are many plants and animals that have evolved with and rely upon fire at some point in their life cycle- sagebrush, meadow voles, black-backed woodpeckers, even sequoias. Fire suppression and the associated "demonization" of fire have brought us to the current state of super high fuel loads that result in high severity burns. Recognizing that fire plays an important role in creating habitat is the first step in responsible forest management.
It is amazing to watch ecological succession in action!

Re: G

I totally understand what you're saying. I guess I should have included that this was not a natural occurrence from something like lightening, but a plane crash that exploded on the mountain side. Had it been natural I would definitely be more understanding, but it wasn't. I think the reason I'm so sad about it is because A) it wasn't natural and B) because there was a wildfire there last year that already burned half that area and there is another burn area southwest of that burned over 5 years ago and was so hot it incinerated all the seeds (and homes!) that would have had a chance to grow back. I've been in that area and there is nothing but post burn weeds that are poisonous and no trees sprouting yet. I hope that this fire isn't as hot as that one but we'll have to see. I'll be able to access that area next week and we'll see how bad it is. Still, sad times!

I feel you! I get so upset when we have fires here, and even though I know fires are a regular part of the landscape here in Oz, it breaks my heart to see the bush burning. It will recover, and it will even encourage something to sprout and become even healthy, but it doesn't take away from the fact that so much will die in order for that to happen. If you feel up to it, let us know when they stop the fire, what caused it, and what the ultimate damage is. I would be really curious to know. I am also going to guess the cause is arson or a rogue campfire. Most forest fires are.

It is so devastating! I saw this horrible story on the news of a 20 year old mom and her 1.5 year old daughter, not surviving the fire. My thoughts go out to all affected by the fires. Please stay safe!

I know it's hard to watch a place you love burn, but forest fires are vital to the ecology of the area as well. Hopefully this was not caused by humans, and is just part of the natural cycle of the land. And of course I hope everyone near the area stays safe.
